The charm of the existing house, while Arts and Crafts in style, fell short of our client’s desires. However, the allure of the property’s setting was undeniable, set within 22 acres of parkland with ponds, streams, and bands of woodland encircling it. The challenge was to employ the ‘replacement dwelling’ Green Belt development exceptions to craft a home that harmonised with this natural spectacle, bridging the separation between dwelling and environment.

The design narrative unfolds in layers, revealing a south-facing facade exuding grandeur and ornate stonework with descending scales, creating a rhythmic flow. The traditional walled garden, typically at the rear of a country house, takes an innovative turn, slicing through the residence to create a courtyard. Carefully positioned openings within the facade act as focal points, surrounded by details that emphasise the elaborate nature of the surroundings. The house serves as both refuge and lens, inviting a re-appreciation of the natural world. With a hope for timeless simplicity, this residence is a testament to close collaboration with the client and thoughtful design.

The defining material of this home, reconstituted stone, is a versatile tool in the architect’s hands. Produced through precision casting and curing, it extends beyond cladding panels, forming the very essence of this building. Imagining the artisan’s touch, akin to the carving of gargoyles atop a country house, here it is manifested in the delicate detailing of ribs and crease reveals. The house stands as a testament to craftsmanship, offering both comfort and grandeur.
